There are just nine days left before Friday the 13th: The Game disappears from sale forever

With just over a week left until its shutdown, players are bidding farewell to Friday the 13th: The Game, an ambitious multiplayer horror experience that has provided its share of thrills and chills since its 2017 debut. This game from IllFonic gained a following by letting survivors outwit or outrun the menacing figure of Jason, who hunts them in the eerie environs of Camp Crystal Lake. Despite some initial rough spots, the game was praised for its engaging gameplay and received a score of 75 for its entertaining take on multiplayer horror, outshining Dead by Daylight at times thanks to its mix of humor and variety of activities.

Friday the 13th: The Game did not have the smoothest journey. Troubled by significant server issues right out of the gate, it was further hampered by an unexpected lawsuit over the franchise's licensing rights, effectively derailing its expansion content. November 2020 saw the end of the game's dedicated server support, although peer-to-peer play in Quick Match and Private Match modes continued.

The game managed to persist through these setbacks for three additional years until Gun Media, in a dramatic social media post, announced that their licensing rights would expire on December 31st, 2023. Consequently, the game would be delisted from both online and retail platforms.

The company took to Twitter to remind fans of this impending date. Wes Keltner, co-founder of Gun Media, took to his personal social media account to convey his gratitude to the community, sharing stories of friendships and even romances that blossomed within the game's fan base. He emphasized his motivation for creating such games: to see people forge connections and enjoy themselves.

Keltner also shared a glimmer of hope, confirming that the game's servers would remain operational until at least December 31st, 2024. Hence, this serves as a last call for those who wish to indulge in the experience. With the game currently available at a modest price on Steam and the additional content costing less than a dollar each, it's positioned as an appealing offer.

For those hesitant to invest in a game with potentially limited playtime remaining, IllFonic has released other asymmetrical multiplayer titles post-Friday the 13th, including Predator: Hunting Grounds and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, though these have not quite hit the same high mark. Alternatively, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game or the stalwart Dead by Daylight could provide lasting horror-themed entertainment.
