Nintendo GameShare: Expanding Cooperative Play Across Systems

This article provides an overview of an interesting capability available on the Nintendo Switch platform. It highlights how an exclusive title can be shared between systems to allow cooperative play in both local, streamed, and online settings.

The feature, known as GameShare, is one of the lesser-known functions available on the latest Nintendo console. It enables a game owned on one Switch 2 to be shared with another console—including an original version—so that multiple players can enjoy local multiplayer experiences, and in some cases, online play through a dedicated chat service. Not every title supports this feature; only a select few, such as the highly anticipated platform adventure and party games, have the necessary compatibility. Nintendo has stated that systems can only receive games that meet specific compatibility requirements.

In a recent digital presentation, it was demonstrated that the exclusive platform adventure title supports a cooperative mode similar to that seen in another popular adventure game. In this mode, one player manages the main character while a second player takes charge of an assisting character. The assistance is provided through various actions using an alternative control method, which adds an additional layer to the gameplay.

This cooperative option is available in multiple formats:

  • TV mode using a Joy-Con for the second player
  • Local multiplayer with two separate consoles utilizing the GameShare function

If a single player exclusively possesses the game, the… other can obtain access via their console—whether it is the newer system or an original Edition. It’s essential to remember that this access remains available only during the active session on the host console. Rather than a complete download, the game is streamed to the additional device.

Another noteworthy detail is the ability to engage in online play, although this mode appears to be limited to two newer systems connecting through a game-specific chat feature. To use this function, players need to set up a chat session and invite their friend to join the cooperative game experience.
