Microsoft Renames 'Chat' and Updates Features in Latest Windows 11 Update

The most recent 23H2 update for Windows 11 by Microsoft not only includes a substantial overhaul of the operating system (OS), but also a name change for its Chat app, now known as Microsoft Teams (free).

Amit Fulay, Product VP for Microsoft Teams, stated that the renovated app would offer a more customer-oriented interface, allowing users to chat, make calls, and organize free meetings more conveniently. The new version also features a desktop view that is designed to be less intrusive.

Apart from a conventional, large Teams window, the app now also includes a new, compact 'Mini' feature, accessible via the top right corner of the app. The Teams platform, predominantly used in corporate settings for robust video conferencing and collaborative online work, has yet to significantly penetrate the everyday consumer market despite its advanced features.

Among the highlighted additions is the 'SMS in Teams' feature, which enables users to send and receive SMS through the Teams app via compatible Android devices. Unfortunately, iPhone users will not be able to use this feature at this stage.

Microsoft has also made adjustments to its gaming functionality, community sector, and notifications settings on Teams. John Cable, VP of Windows Servicing and Delivery Program Management, referring to the improvements, said the company aims to deliver new features within a familiar, speedy, and dependable update experience.

Earlier, in September, Windows undertook a more extensive update, incorporating AI-boosted tools for Paint, the inclusion of a native Copilot in the OS, and a smoother backup procedure, among other upgrades.

Windows 11 users can install this update now through Settings > Windows Update.
